Monte Carlo debuted at #5 for a total gross of $7,600,000 for the weekend. It has a 20 million budget so it should be able to make that money back. I loved the movie so much and it was so funny! I couldn’t stop laughing at the graduation scene with Leighton and a lot of other parts that everybody else was also laughing at! Spread how good the movie is by telling people you know when you talk to them and through social networking like Facebook and Twitter.

Yeah me too, but it won’t flop because it’ll make the money back. The role was too reminiscent of Lizzie Mcguirre so it threw a lot of the box office crowd who likes Romantic Comedies off because it sounded to Disney. Like when the Variety article came out about Selena being in Monte Carlo it just said three women who pretend to be rich, but it said nothing about the mistaken identity. I bet if the article had included that, there would have been a huge backlash for Selena not to do Monte Carlo. The release date was awful because they stacked it on top of blockbuster season and I know people say Transformers isn’t an audience to compete with, but teenagers see it including girls like me and then Harry Potter comes out 2 weeks after . I agree with their decision to have moved its regular release date, but they should have kept it in the month of February or moved it to March/April. Let me cut it short on marketing because I might write an essay. Music doesn’t =people going to see the movie. Just because Who Says is playing in the background and her cd comes out the week of doesn’t effect the film. This isn’t a When the Sun Goes Down commercial. Also mall tours are good for fans, but are not gonna reflect upon box office numbers. Then the poster made it seem even more Disney because it looked like ppp all over again. They should have made it look more teen/adult oriented. They should have milked Corey/Leighton more as well. Most of all they should have omitted the mistaken identity plot. I enjoyed the movie though. Also I know it hasn’t been decided, but I hope she doesn’t take the Charlotte role in the Carrie Diaries. Selena should pick better roles I wanna go to the movies and see her on the big screen living out her dreams forever:)
I know right it was soo good! Emma was my favorite character I loved her accent and her story, plus it was funny to find out about the front page catalog story lolll. I walked out falling in love with Katie Cassidy and loving Leighton/Selena even more!<3

REAL reasons it most likely failed:
1) No A-List stars.
Face it. Selena, Katie and Leighton are only known to a very small audience a.k.a. pre-teen and teen girls. The pre-teen crowd pretty much has no power to see a movie unless mommy and daddy either drop them off at the theater and/or approve the movie itself.
2) Cliched Premise
It’s really “The Prince and the Pauper”, but most audiences think it’s a copy of “The Lizzie Maguire Movie” (based on same premise). It doesn’t help that this looks like a fluffy Disney-esque made-for-TV movie even though it’s Fox Studios.
I wish they had stuck with the original premise the novel had and adapted that to fit teenagers. That would have been a lot more original, but this is a clear case of corporate studio heads thinking that would be too sophisticated, or “dark” for kids.
3) Virtually No Advertisement
You would expect Disney channel and/or Nickelodeon to be running ads 24/7, since they share the very audience this movie is aimed at… Yet there was almost no commercials on either kid network. This is the one thing that shocked me, to be blunt.
4) Bad Timing
Monte Carlo had an original release date for earlier this Spring. They should have kept to that because there was no competition and this is the prefect movie to chase away Winter Blues… But Fox decided to counter-program against TF simply because Fox didn’t have any big movie releases this holiday weekend which is odd to say the least. I think deep down someone had to know this was going to tank, but sometimes a Hail Mary pass does pay off. Not in this case, though.

Make no mistake, folks. This movie is an official failure.
Like I said in another thread, the box office take is only going to go DOWN as the weeks progress. That’s bad news because theater owners don’t get a big cut even when a movie does well. THIS is why most movies that don’t do well opening weekend disappear a month later, or less. The theaters can’t afford to keep a bomb when there are other potentially more profitable movies waiting to take it’s place.
For Selena fans hoping this would be her big break… What she is going to have to do is be a co-star along side more established A-listers. Not only will that help ease her into the mainstream, but it will also help her hone her craft more AND it will show industry people she is willing to pay her dues. Headling a movie and it doing badly is the worst thing that could have happened to her because now, industry execs will equate Selena Gomez with box office poison, right or wrong. This is why her next project “13 Reasons Why” HAS to do well. If it doesn’t, she’s through. When I say, “through”, I mean, she’s going to have to take co-starring roles and start at the bottom — Which is what I said; She probably should have done this in the first place. It’s funny how when you have droves of pre-teen fans you and your people think you are automatically going to transition to more adult audiences with no effort, but life has a funny way of humbling you, don’t it?

Sorry, but the biggest reason it failed is because her fans are all talk.
